Coimbatore : Good news awaits air travellers from Coimbatore, as the Ministry of Aviation has finally requested private airliners to operate more international flights from Coimbatore.

The much-awaited action comes after MP A. Raja's efforts to highlight the plight of the city's international airport in the Parliament session.

During the last session at the Parliament, the Nilgiris MP, A. Raja stressed to consider approving direct flights to Dubai, Kuala Lampur and Bangkok from Coimbatore. He also alleged that after even 10 years of pleading the Ministry to consider the plight of the international airport in Coimbatore, no action has been initiated.

The MP also questioned as to why such critical facilities are being denied to an industrial city like Coimbatore?.

On June 26, MP A. Raja met the Civil Aviation Minister of India in person and submitted a petition requesting the same.

Replying to his plea, on July 22, Hardeep Singh, Civil Aviation Minister noted that "Air India and Silk Air has been functioning flights to foreign destinations like Sri Lanka, Singapore and Sharjah. As adding of new International flights is not possible immediately, he have recommended to the private airline operators to operate more flights to international destinations from Coimbatore."

The Ministry also assured that going forward, adequate facilities will be established to enable private aviation companies to commence operation of more international flights from Coimbatore.
