Coimbatore : Urbanization is a natural part of developing society, but it has its downside as well. It does pose a serious threat to the environment, thus affecting the health and quality of life of the urban population.

In a bid to assess environmental impact and achieve sustainability in urbanisation, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has instructed all Corporation and Municipalities to compile a comprehensive report on the level of urbanisation in their respective cities.
Considering the importance of a climate-sensitive approach for sustainable urban development, a city-level assessment on usage of natural resources and other parameters would be conducted on a bi-annual basis, said the MoHUA.
In connection to this, the Coimbatore City and Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has sought data from various departments like Pollution Control Board, PWD, TNEB, TWAD and Forest department.
The categories under the framework include - Energy and Green buildings, Urban planning, Green cover and bio diversity, Mobility and air quality, Water resource management and Waste management.
Briefing on this, a senior corporation official said, “A detailed assessment of fuel usage, electricity consumption and solar energy used for domestic and commercial purposes in the city will be carried out. The results will give us a fair idea about the level of urbanisation. After receiving data from all government departments, a master report would be compiled and send to the ministry before the end of this month.”
This initiative by MoHUA will help the Ministry arrive at a benchmark, under Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework. The assessment will bolster the efforts taken by the government towards acheiving sustainable urbanisation.
