Coimbatore : In a first of its kind initiative, CUBE is all set to train people of Coimbatore to set up Home Butterfly Gardens in their own backyards to moot butterfly conservation in the city.
The new training programme offered by the Centre for Urban Biodiversity Conservation and Education would help you share your home with butterflies of vivid patterns and colours.
Coimbatore : In a first of its kind initiative, CUBE is all set to train people of Coimbatore to set up Home Butterfly Gardens in their own backyards to moot butterfly conservation in the city.
The programme would see butterfly experts train the participants in setting up butterfly gardens and also teach them the methods involved, maintenance and impart ample knowledge about butterflies and their importance.
The organisers further stated that they aim to improve the urban greenery, which will have a strong influence on the human wellbeing, as well as provide habitats and corridors for the dwindling butterfly population in city environment.
“The idea is to attract butterflies to your home naturally on a regular basis. This does not involve caging the butterflies, but making your home, a habitat for them.,” said R. Sundar, a volunteer at CUBE.
Claiming that the method involved is not restricted to any stipulated space, he said that any small space can be converted into a butterfly garden.
“Butterflies play a crucial role in pollination and are sensitive to environmental changes, which make them an excellent indicator species. Even the smallest of plants that we find on our streets, can be a home for several species of butterflies. Singanallur Lake, which is situated in the heart of the Coimbatore City, hosts more than 100 species of butterflies,” said N. Anand, a butterfly researcher from Coimbatore.
However, he warned that in the process of urbanisation, butterflies are moving away from urban spaces, adding that certain interventions such as theses were need of the hour to help conserve butterflies.
The team is to train a first batch of 30 participants in the third week of August, the registration for which closes on August 10th.
Training programme is to be conducted regularly at a venue in Coimbatore, which is to be announced later. Certificates will be provided to the participants only after the Follow-up Assessment after 30 days of establishing the garden at home. The participants will be offered saplings of host plants of butterflies.
