The Ganesh idol production has gained momentum in Mettupalayam (MTP) in view of the forthcoming festival.
Since there are no idol makers in Kongu region, barring a few centres, it was customary for the population of Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur to worship the idols of Lord Ganesh which were imported from Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts. Shoppers used to sell it for a premium.
In the meanwhile, a group of idol- making craftsmen from Cuddalore, who are residing in Gandhi Nagar, Karamadai is actively engaged in the process of making idols for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi.
This time around, the eye-catching idols and figurines are being made with natural raw materials like pure paper porridge, cassava flour and bamboo sticks. The statues range from 2 feet to 10 feet tall.
As a new arrival flood the market, Lord Ganesh figurines are being made in every other form including that of Lord Siva, complete with Ganga Devi with a crescent in the head, serpent garland in the neck. Other such stylistic statues include Bahubali Vinayakar, Ganesh with Tabla in hand and Kolattam above the head, Goddess Parvathi and Lord Shiva with three head Ganesh
Around 50 such new models would be flooding the market during the season say the craftsmen.
The figurines are being sold in a price range of Rs 2,500 to Rs 20, 0000 based on the height and girth. The statues are painted with water paints so that the water bodies are not affected when the statues get immersed during the immersion ceremony.
Craftsmen Kumar and Krishnaveni said “that we have been carrying out this work for the past four generations and the camp is set up in Coimbatore, where the idol procession and worship is more in numbers”
“After Ganesh Chaturthi season ends, we would be engaged in making idols and toys for “Golu” festival and earn for their livelihood” they said
The artists also appealed to the district administration to help them to sell their idols, by allotting sales centres and platforms for them.
