Tirupur : Alleging that unhygienic conditions in Padayappa Nagar led to the death of four-year-old after he contracted dengue, the residents staged a roadblock protest in Oothukuli road due to which traffic was thrown out of gear for close to an hour.

They demanded basic amenities including sewers and regular garbage disposal in their neighbourhood.

“The repeated complaints to the corporation authorities only fell on deaf ears” the protesters said.

The irate residents gave up the protest only when Police and Corporation officials arrived at the spot and promised to attend to their grievances.

The said four-year-old boy Lokesh son of Natesan, a knitwear employee, of Padayappa Nagar, died of dengue fever today.

Lokesh, who was suffering from Dengue fever was admitted to Tirupur Government Hospital on July 14, but was later shifted to CMCH. However, the boy succumbed to the fever.

According to sources, the fever cases including dengue are fast-spreading after the seasonal rains and the increase in mosquito density. Two patients each from Coimbatore and Erode and one from Tiruppur are undergoing treatment for dengue at the special ward in CMCH.

11 others including 4 children have been admitted to the hospital for flu treatment, while about 200 patients have attended the outpatient clinic for flu-related illnesses on Friday.
