Coimbatore sets new record in tree planting as NGO Siruthuli plants 10,000 saplings in 3 minutes

Coimbatore : The tree planting initiative carried out by Siruthuli has seen a new record as more than 10,000 saplings were planted in 3 minutes at the Bharathi Vanam, a forest patch set up at the Bharathiar University here on Thursday.


Coimbatore: The tree planting initiative carried out by Siruthuli has seen a new record as more than 10,000 saplings were planted in three minutes at the Bharathi Vanam, a forest patch set up at the Bharathiar University here on Thursday.

According to the organisers, as many as 10,154 saplings were planted in three minutes, which is said to be a record.



NSS volunteers from more than 25 educational institutions in and around Coimbatore participated and more than 5000 volunteers participated in the mega event, organised at the foothills of the Western Ghats.

The event was funded by ZF Wind Power company, and was attended by various NGO members and corporates.



Inaugurating the event, S.V. Balasubramaniam, Chairman of Siruthuli said that such large miwayaki patches would help in the increase of green cover and also increases the ground water table.



“At a time when trees are being cut in the name of development, such initiates would help maintain the temperature here,” he added.

He also lauded the collective efforts of organisations such as the Siruthuli in increasing the ground water table, which was drastically low in 2003.



Later, Deepak Pohekar, Executive Director of ZF Wind Power, said that they have planned to plant around two million saplings in the coming years to contribute for the green cause.



Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli said that the event is also being done in the memory of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The Bharathi Vanam would be taken care by volunteers of NSS and Siruthuli.
