Coimbatore: The controversy over bike taxis which are prohibited by the Motor Vehicles Act continues to haunt the city. A special squad has now been appointed to seize bike taxis booked through Rapido.
The Rapido bike taxis are subjected to investigation and then seized by the special squad based on the Motor Vehicles Act. Meanwhile, vehicles registered for personal use have also been used for transportation, either through Rapido or Rent a Bike app that has not been permitted in Tamil Nadu.
The Collector urged the public not to download and use apps like Rapido since it is being operated against the Motor Vehicles Act which prohibits use of personal vehicles for rent or other transport. The primary complaint against using these rides is that in the event of accidents occurring while using these ride services, the victim cannot claim for compensation or insurance.
Hence, the District Collector K Rajamani has warned that Rapido bike taxi owners, drivers and users will be subject to strict action under the Motor Vehicles Act and their vehicles will be seized by the Transport Department officials.
