Minister S P Velumani inaugurated the Centre for sale of Coconut Copra in Nallur, Pollachi. The lowest price for Coconut Copra was decided by the Cooperative Association. The Deputy Speaker Jayaraman, MLA Kasthuri Vasu, DRO Ramathurai Murugan, Cooperative Association Deputy Registrar Palanisamy, Divisional Revenue Officer Ravikumar and others participated.
Addressing the media, Minister S P Velumani said, "Centres for sale of Coconut Copra has been sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board (TNSAMB) in Coimbatore. Under this scheme, the first centre has been set up in Nallur on the Pollachi-Palakkad highway. Here, the Tamil Nadu Government has fixed halved Coconut Copra at Rs. 95.21 and full Coconut Copra at Rs. 99.20."
The Minister also added that Coconut Copra with wrinkles, black marks and fungal infections can only be of 10 percent and moisture content of the coconuts needs to be within 6%. "The defected Coconut Copra moisture can be of 7%. The circumference of the coconut needs to be at least 75 millimetres. All selling should comply to the rules fixed by the State and Central Governments," he reiterated.
"Coconut farmers were given identity cards by the Agricultural Department last year and have been asked to renew their identity cards for this year. The farmers can register themselves at the Cooperative Society using the card, photocopy of their patta, chitta or their Aadhaar card or bank account photocopy at the respective offices and sell their Coconut Copra. The officials will also inspect and weigh the Copra, and then deposit the equivalent amount in the bank accounts of the farmers. For inspection, special officers have been appointed at the Agricultural and Trading Departments," stated Minister S P Velumani even as he encouraged coconut farmers in Coimbatore to avail of the opportunity.
