On July 22, You Tube-famous LMES Academy conducted the Big Bang Science program which aimed to help children learn scientific concepts in an interesting way. The idea was to present 'Science' not just as a subject but to make it understood in a practical way. With an intent to enhance the interest of students toward science and help increase their scientific knowledge to bring about a change in their lives, these programs were organized.
The Head of LMES Academy, Prem Anand stated, "The growth of science today is seen in the form of cell phones which fit into our palms. We can be aware of many of the scientific concepts through the mobile itself. If we learn through the practical approach, then we can learn easily," he added and followed up with a demonstration of certain scientific methods to the students gathered there.
Prem Anand asked the students to make a loud noise and recorded the vibrations through an app on his mobile phone and explained the formation of the sound waves. He then went on to relate the concept to every day situations. He used a blower to blow out and explained to students about the velocity and intensity of wind which uses the Bernoulli principle. He also dealt with concepts in chemistry and explained to them the changes happening within the body.
Students who normally do not evince much interest in a classroom environment were enraptured by the demonstration and showed keen interest in understanding the formulas, participating with enthusiasm as some scientific methods with concepts were explained. They cheerfully answered questions posed by Prem Anand, too.
Prem Anand also demonstrated how Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposes into water and oxygen gas, which is in the form of foam. The same was explained in the context of the burp after a glass of ENO is consumed. He also explained several concepts on the formation of tornadoes and so on. Over 500 students from private and Government schools participated.
All Rotary Clubs have joined hands to set up libraries in 100 Government schools. The funds for this project was distributed to the principals of the 100 government schools by Rajshekar, the Governor elect of Rotary.
