Coimbatore : Members of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) staged a demonstration here on Wednesday against the Union Government’s move to corporatise seven railway production units and profit-making express trains,
The protesting members led by their General Secretary N. Kanniah condemned that the centre's proposal to implement privatisation with two profit-making trains in each zone that would affect not only the railway employees, but the passengers, at large.
"In Coimbatore, the Railway Workshop on Goods Shed road has been ear-marked for privatisation. And, two profitable trains Chennai - Madurai and Chennai - Coimbatore Express has been planned for privatisation", alleged N. Kanaiah, General Secretary of SRMU.
He added that close to 30 railway stations of Southern Railway have been ear-marked for privatisation.
"If privatised, the train fares would go up. Even the platform tickets which presently is Rs.10 could be hiked to Rs.100", he opined.
He pointed that "The middle class and poor people who predominantly use rail service to travel will be severely affected by the decision of privatisation."
The General Secretary of SRMU apprised that SRMU would stage nationwide protest condemning the centre's move to privatize the Railways.
