159th Income Tax day observed; blood donation camp held

Coimbatore : To commemorate the 159th Income Tax day, a blood donation camp was organised by the Income tax department on Wednesday.

The event was headed by hief Commissioner of Income tax, Durgasaran Das. 

Addressing the media, the Income tax Commissioner said, "The system of taxation has been prevalent since the age of kings. The British introduced the concept of tax based on income in the year 1860. The decision to collect income tax was taken on July 24, hence every year July 24 is celebrated as Income Tax day."

He noted that income tax was initially collected from wealthy Britishers in India, later it changed to collecting tax from all sections of people with high incomes. 

"Income tax is an important source of income to the government and it is constructively used for the betterment of the nation. The day is observed to create awareness on income tax", said Durgasaran Das.

As part of the celebrations, essay and drawing competitions for both primary and secondary schools were also conducted on July 19 at the Government College premises. On July 23, tree saplings were planted near the Vellalore lake. 

Following this he said, the blood donation camp saw 100 people participating including officials and their family members. A special income tax day program was also conducted in the Mani school auditorium in Coimbatore. 

He also added saying that income tax is the only department that is fully computerised. He further added that all transactions are carried out online and  complaints can be registered through online.

The collected tax is reused for the betterment of the society and also aids in creation many allied job opportunities like people who assist in filing income tax returns for individuals and companies. 

He finally concluded saying that the income tax payers must come forward to pay their taxes on time and help in the development of the country.
