Coimbatore : Honouring the work carried out by local youth in strengthening a check dam at the Vadugapalayam pond, private and public bodies teamed up to desilt the pond on Wednesday.

The desilting work funded by ZF Windpower organisation was inaugurated by the District Collector K. Rajamani in the presence of officials from ZF, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), NGO members and general public. A special Pooja marked the commencing of the work.

Located at the Sulur Taluk near Kittampalayam, the pond is a source of ground water recharge for upto ten villages including Thekkalur and Karumathampatti.

Being fed by one of the tributaries of the Koushika River Basin, the pond had dried up because of a leakage in the check dam at the lake. However, local youth came together and mooted by NGOs like the Koushika Rejuvenation Movement, started repairing the pond with the help of DRDA.

When the check dam was finally repaired and a wall constructed across the stream, water began to stagnate at the pond helping the farming villages nearby.

Later, DRDA officials offered support through the Jal Shakthi Abhiyan scheme to desilt the pond and work commenced today.

Meanwhile, personnel from a military camp nearby had offered to plant and take care of saplings at the bund of the pond.

District Collector T.N. Hariharan, had offered continuous support for the project with a promised visit within 45 days. The Koushika Pond at Kulathupalayam is also to be desilted soon.
