Coimbatore : For the past few months, the residents of RS Puram are facing the menace of travelling in bumpy roads. All roads in RS Puram got unruly, after the French Company 'Suez' who are working on the 24x7 water distribution commenced their pipe laying works by digging up roads using JCBs.

Since then, constant complaints were raised by the residents who alleged Suez for not re-laying the dug roads properly. "With heavy drizzles in the city for the past week, the roads have become even slippery and prone to accidents. Especially, T.V. Swamy Road in R.S.Puram are in a very bad shape", lament the residents.

Responding to their allegations, Suez have commenced work to repair the roads. To order to avoid public nuisance, the repair works are being carried out during the night, under the supervision of officials from City Corporation.

Speaking on anonymity, a senior official said, "It's true that roads were damaged in the process of laying pipe lines. But as per procedure, re-laying can be completed only after the work is completed in the entire area. Refilling of dug roads will be done by Suez temporarily but actual restoration of roads will be done only after the project is commissioned, as per terms of the contract. However, the process is delayed due to several unforeseen issues during the course of work."

"Due to intermittent rains in the city, the roads have become too slippery which probed the residents to complain. More than 15 engineers from Suez and a team of contract workers got into action to repair the roads. Two roads - Ponnurangam road and T.V.Swamy road were temporarily restored to avoid further accidents. As per the contract, once the project is commissioned, Suez has to restore 50 kms of road in and around R.S.Puram pilot area. As these two roads pose serious risk to the motorists and pedestrians, these two roads alone have been re-laid", added the official.

The 24x 7 water supply project and Suez has been under criticism from the public and opposition parties. However, according to the officials from Suez involved in the project, the company is taking every possible step to rectify problems as quickly as possible.
