Despite having smaller rescue centres run by private parties, the city has never had one run by the Government.

The city hosts more than 450 species of birds and stands next to Nairobi in the list of cities with highest bird populations in the world.

Currently, the decision is being reviewed by a committee, which would inspect the spot before beginning of constructions.

Officials have said that since there is a monkey rescue centre at Rajkori, which has two cages, a water body and rooms that could be converted into clinics to treat birds.

The monkey rehabilitation centre spread over 1.2 acres is currently not functioning. Though the move is welcome by birders, they felt that lack of staff could pose difficulties to run the same.
