Owing to road expansion works on Mettupalayam main road, more than 300 trees have been identified to be cut to expand the stretch from MTP to PN Palayam.
The existing two-lane road from Periyanaickenpalayam to MTP road will soon be converted into a four-lane road for around 15 km for which the existing road is being widened.
Road widening works along the MTP stretch is been carried out at a cost of Rs.100 crores. For the same, trees along the stretch for about 15 kms are being cut. Canopy trees like tamarind and neem trees, interspersed with ground cover provide shade and home to large variety of birds will be cut, shortly.
Around 300 trees have been ear marked to be axed and more than 50 workers are being employed to cut down the trees within a stipulated period of time.
Meanwhile, the enviromentalist from the city have reitrated the Madras High Court bench's judgement ordering NHAI to plant 10 saplings for every tree cut for the four lane Project by NHAI's Implementation Unit.
