Coimbatore: CODISSIA along with the Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI) Federation are jointly hosting a Book Festival from July 19 to 28 at the CODISSIA Industrial Complex on Avinashi Road.

Young writers have been felicitated with awards at the Book Festival. This year, awards were presented for three categories - fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The awards carry a cash prize of Rs.25,000 and a citation. In the fiction category, Guna Kandhaswamy was awarded the prize for the book 'Kattralaipachai,' in the non-fiction category N Guruswamy won the prize for his book 'The History of Tamil Literature (with new insights from the 1970s onwards)' and Solai Maayavan was awarded the prize in the poetry category.
Writer Vannanilavan, the Chief Guest at the awards ceremony said, "I was a young writer at one point of time. In this digital world, where there are many distractions and reading has dwindled, it is surprising to see writers who are enthusiastic and passionate. Readers need to buy more books and read. It is necessary to read books on a variety of subjects and not just novels and short stories. Reading is like meditation," he added.
The Chairman of the Literary Group Association, D Balasundram, in his address praised Guna Kandhaswamy for his work. "Guna has shared his life experiences in his novel. He has lived in different countries and these have been covered well. Readers must buy these books and read them. Young writers should be motivated to share many more of their experiences through their work," he opined.
S Natarajan while addressing the gathering congratulated N Guruswamy saying, "Only Tamil and Chinese are medicinal-based languages. Other words do not have these privileges. The Tamil Language is extraordinary and this needs to be recognized by the next generation. This responsibility needs to be shouldered by the young writers." S Natarajan appreciated the efforts taken by the writer to document all the incidents from 1970 onward for over three years.
Marabin Muthiah wished the poet Solai Maayavan saying that literary creation is based on the portrayal of events in a skillful manner. "In that sense, the poet has captured and portrayed the situations prevailing in the place that he lives in and the degradation of the environment in an attractive manner. The poetry which described the way men use abusive language against women and needed to be punished deserves special mention," he added.
The awards ceremony drew to a close with the awardees delivering acceptance speeches. The Chairman of CODISSIA, Ramamurthy and the Chairman of the Book Festival, Vijay Anand were present at the occasion. The award-winning books written by Guna Kandhaswamy are being made available at the Tamizhini bookstall while the books written by N Guruswamy and Solai Mayavan will be available at the Nambikkai bookstall.
