Public question delay in re-opening Dodabetta peak for tourists

The Nilgiris: Even as the road relaying work at the popular tourist attraction in the Nilgiris district, the Dodabetta peak in Ooty has almost reached 95%, the delay in reopening the tourist spot for political reasons has irked the public.

The Nilgiris: Even as the road relaying work at the popular tourist attraction in the Nilgiris district, the Dodabetta peak in Ooty has almost reached 95%, the delay in reopening the tourist spot for political reasons has irked the public.

Doddabetta is the highest mountain in the Nilgiri Mountains at 2,637 metres (8,650 feet). There is a reserve forest area around the peak. It is 9 km from Ooty, on the Ooty-Kotagiri Road in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu, India.

Over two months, the 3 km stretch to Dodabetta belonging to the forest department was closed for renovation works. The roads leading to peak were completely deranged and bumpy causing much inconvenience to the tourists.

Hence, upon repeated requests from the tourists and the public of Ooty to relay the roads, the district administration sanctioned Rs. 1.9 crores for relaying the entire stretch of 3 km.

Due to the closure, the shopkeepers, taxis and autos in Dodabetta were largely affected. Though the works are almost complete, the delay in reopening the stretch for tourists has annoyed the people who are dependent on the tourist population for their livelihood.

However, due to political reasons, the stretch is kept closed, say sources.
