The increasing numbers of begging with new borns simply show the lack of awareness among the public to report such incidents to child helpline, 1098 or the police control room 100.
In one such incident, instead of ignoring a man begging with a newly born child in his hand, the alert public at the Aavin Milk Parlor opposite to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) stopped the man and escalated the issue to the Police.
Meanwhile, Sindhu, Inspector of KK Chavadi Police and Babu, Founder of NGO Sudar who were present at the spot, rescued the child from the man who claimed to be the father of the child.
As the child was said to be in a dehydrated and weak state, they got some milk from the nearby Aavin Parlor and fed the baby. Several wounds were also spotted in the baby's body which were cleaned by the them. The baby was then wrapped in a clean cloth.
Shortly, the Race Course Police and officials from the Social Welfare department arrived to the spot and enquired with the father and mother of the child. As the parents failed to take care of the child and had used the baby for begging, the officials called up Childline 1098 to hand over the child.
The mother of the child denied to hand over the child to the officials instead promised to take care of the baby well and not use the child for begging, again.
The police even told the mother that they could arrange a shelter home for both the baby and her. However, the mother denied and promised to take care of the child.
The officials later handed over the child to the parents after getting a written consent from them.
The officials urged the public to report such incidents involving children to 1098 Childline.
