Coimbatore: The 5th Edition of Coimbatore Book Festival (CBF) 2019 was inaugurated at Codissia Trade Fair Complex, Coimbatore by District Collector, K.Rajamani on Friday.
CODISSIA in association with Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI) has organised this book expo to be held from July 19 to 28.
"More than 150 publishers will be participating in the event which will have 250 stalls. Admission is free for public and necessary infrastructure and facilities has been made for the visitors. Free transportation from Avinashi road to CODISSIA trade fair complex has been arranged", said the organisers.
Inaugurating the event on Friday, the District Collector said, "People of all age groups should visit book festivals, especially, the younger generation. Reading has always proved to develop and nourish young minds. Reading not only attributes to knowledge but also develops your intuitive skills."
He expressed concern over the drop in reading habit among the youth, hence urged the parents and teachers to encourage students to read good books which will help enhance their knowledge.
Recalling his childhood, Collector K. Rajamani said, "My father cultivated the reading habit in me from a very young age. When I was young, I got introduced to Gandhi, Marx and Spirituality through books recommended by my father and that made my life better."
Collector, K.Rajamani further stated that "It's a good sign that the workers were given due importance in the book festival. Having a library in every industry and encouraging reading habits among workers is a welcome sign. Writers, publishers and book sellers should be encouraged."
Speaking at the event, R.Ramamurthy, President CODISSIA said, " CODISSIA is organising this book festival, as a part of its CSR activity. The expo aims to inculcate and improve reading habit among children and youngsters. Books can change mindsets for the better. Leaders like Gandhi, Nehru and Ambedkar were voracious readers."

Vijayanandh, Chairman of CBF stated, "This year, life time achievement award will be presented to Vannanilavan. Starting this year, CBF will grant a cash prize and citation to young writers in three categories - fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The award for young fiction story writer will be presented to Guna Kandasamy and young poet award will be presented to Solai Mayavan. And, Gurudamy, will be awarded best writer in Non-Fiction category."
"For the first time, essay writing competition for students will be held conducted in association with the Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore. So far, the response has been over whelming. We have received 3000 essays, out of which the best 1000 essays will be selected for special prize worth Rs.3 to 4 lakhs. The remaining essays will also be recognized with certificates", stated Vijayanandh.
Members of CODISSIA, organisers of CBF, writers, publishers and readers participated in the event.
