Pappammal of Thirumalaigoundenpalayam in Avinashi taluk, who belonged to the arunthathiyar community was working as a noon meal cook at a government school. She was humiliated by parents from the upper caste who urged the officials to transfer her to another school, as they did not want their children to have the food cooked by a woman from Dalit community.
Then the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) directed the state government to book the block development officer, Meenakshi of Avinashi for acting in accordance to the demands of non-dalits and cancelling deputation of Pappal. Eight others (non Dalit parents) were also arrested.
Many political parties including Periyar Iyakkam participated in the protest and urged to speed up the case.
