New Delhi : A. Raja, MP of the Nilgiris Constituency has petioned to the Minstry of Housing and Urban Affairs to retain the Government of India Press (GIP) that is functioning in Coimbatore.
The MP met Hardeep Singh Puri and submitted a petition requesting to retain the GIP that is functioning at Press colony here.
In 2018, several protests were held by political parties condemning the closure of the press spread across 132.7 acres of land in Press Colony here. While the press has printing orders for four more years, the Union government decided to close the GIP in Coimbatore.
Then the protesting parties suspected foul play by the government, as the Union government claimed that there is no scope for printing technology and hence has decided to merge the GIP here with the one operating in Nashik.
It is to be noted that the Union government is running five GIPs in the northern parts of India and the one in Coimbatore, is the only GIP from South India.
