Coimbatore : A team of six mechanical engineering students from Government College of Technology (GCT) have won the first prize in 'complex hardware' category at the recently concluded third edition of Smart India Hackathon.

The students emerged winners for having designed a compressor and nozzle system to reduce petrol vaporization during petrol fill ups.

The team which included Abitha, Balakumaran, Bharani, Pavun Bharath, Karthik and Moulidharan were asked to present a design to eliminate the problem of losing almost 8% to 10% fuel, due to vaporization when filling it to vehicles.

The problem was presented by Indian Oil Corporation. The hackathon was held at a centre in Ghaziabad, one of the 18 centres where the Hackathon was held between July 8 to 12.

“As we are given four days to come out with a solution, we replaced the vaccum pump with a compressor and nozzle system, which was not only cheaper but reduced the vaporization drastically”, said the students from GCT.

"The prototype of our invention was also cost effective, as it could be purchased for Rs.30,000” said one of the team member.

The winning team was given a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh. They were feliciated by the Principal and staff members of GCT for bringing laurels to the City and the College.
