Jal Shakthi Abhiyan: Team from Delhi inspect ground water and rain water harvesting in Mettupalayam

Coimbatore : As part of the Jal Shakthi Abhiyan (JSA) scheme, a team from New Delhi assigned by the Central Government inspected the areas in Mettupalayam (MTP) Municipality to check ground water management and rain water harvesting.

Coimbatore : As part of the Jal Shakthi Abhiyan (JSA) scheme, a team from New Delhi assigned by the Central Government inspected the areas in Mettupalayam (MTP) Municipality to check ground water management and rain water harvesting.

The JSA programme by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation of the Ministry of Jal Shakti had commenced from July 1, the officials formed teams to visit various parts of the district to study water conservation, water management and ways to improve groundwater table.

The team headed by Jayaseelan IAS and Dr. D . Gnanasundar, Scientist-C, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) today inspected schools, marriage halls in MTP and other areas to check for rain water harvesting systems and held discussions with the district administration officials. 

Recently, the JSA officials led by Joint Secretary Deepaand Sahu met K. Rajamani, District Collector, Coimbatore Corporation officials and officials from town panchayats and block development officers to brainstorm ideas to improve water management in the rural and urban areas of the district.



Jayaseelan IAS said the Central Government has decided to inspect the ground water table, as 216 district are facing severe depletion of ground water. In the inspection ongoing in Coimbatore district, all ponds, lakes and borewells are subjected to inspection. 

He further added that methods of rain water harvesting and water management will be discussed with Tamil Nadu government and awareness will be created among the public to conserve water. 

The inspecting officials also noted that water recycling plants worth RS. 30 lakhs will be set up to recycle and resuse water from residents, schools and other organizations. They further noted that after inspection of all areas, a consolidated report will be submitted to the government.
