The Nilgiris : The Superintendent of Police, Kalaiselvan announced that July 17 will be marked as 'Accident Free Day' in Nilgiris and various awareness programs will be conducted to heighten awareness on wearing seat belts and helmets.

With the Police Department constantly works toward making Nilgiris an accident-free zone. They continually conduct awareness programs highlighting the importance of wearing helmets and seat belts and distribute pamphlets, apart from organising other activities.

Nilgiris is known for its long-winding Ghat routes especially the Mysore-Kalahatti-Ooty, Coonoor-Mettupalayam, Kotagiri-Mettupalayam and Gudalur-Ooty trails. With lakhs of tourists flocking the Nilgiris district right through the year, accidents have been on the rise owing to the lack of Ghat road skills as well as blatantly flouring basic road rules like avoiding over speeding, compulsory wearing of helmets and seat belts. Realising this, the District administration and the Police Department have set up various awareness signs all along the roads and are diligent in conducting various awareness campaigns, which they believe have resulted in a lesser number of accidents, this year.
