"While a few places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will get moderate rains, six districts including Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Theni are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall," he added. While Chennai and its suburbs will receive thundershowers during night time, a maximum of 10 cm rain was recorded in Thamaraipakkam in Thiruvallur district while Porur recorded 8 cm in the last 24 hours.

An average precipitation of 6 cm was recorded all over Tamil Nadu in the recent spell of rains. Balachandran also added that the south west monsoon rainfall has been a deficient one thus far, with a deficit of 31 percent recorded all over Tamil Nadu.
