Coimbatore: The annual 'Aadi Kundam' festival at Mettupalayam Vana Bathrakaliamman temple commenced with religious fervour and pomp at the banks of the Bhavani river on Tuesday.

While the main event 'Kundam Iranguthal' (walking on fire) will take place on July 30, the 'Kundam Kan Thirappu' event was celebrated on Tuesday. To mark the special day, 17 kinds of Abhishegam was carried out for the Goddess.
A 20 ft X 10 ft pit was dug and decorated with flowers. The priests performed special poojas and sacrifices to initiate the festival. From this day till July 30, special poojas will be held in the temple, said the organisers.
As over 10,000 devotees from Erode, Tirupur, Nilgiris and Coimbatore are visiting the temple, special buses have been arranged.
