An awareness and grievance camp for the tribal people was jointly organised by the Gudalur Consumer Protection Centre and Revenue Department on Monday at the Kundaladi Govt Primary School near Pandalur, Gudalur taluk.
Responding to the petitions received from the tribals, the RDO said "The government has introduced several welfare schemes to uplift the lives of the tribal. However, lack of awareness among the tribals about the schemes and how to avail it and whom to contact, still prevails. The tribals should putforth their grievance to the concerned officials for redressal. From houses to education, the tribals are given utmost importance."
A recent survey has been conducted to identify homeless tribes. The district administration is taking steps to build houses through contractors, he added.
He assured that the homeless tribes would soon be provided with houses. The Revenue Divisional Officer, Rajkumar also apprised that Rs 1.50 crore has been sanctioned for the drinking water project to Gudalur and the local authorities will be addressing the issue. He noted that steps are taken to supply the full quantity of rice in ration shops.
He requested the tribal people to encourage their children to pursue sports along with academics. The RDO noted that there are 99 vacancies in the forest department for tribals. "The youth should make use of the opportunity to take up the free training and apply for the jobs", he said.
Around 200 petitions were received from the tribal people from Nelakottai Orkadavu, Thanimula, Pazhaiyur, Kadalaikolli, Mangamvayal, Puthurvayal, Ambalapadi, Kundrikadavu, Nelliyalam took part.
The camp was led by Advocate Ganesan. S Siva Subramaniam, President, Gudalur Consumer Protection centre, Tahsildar Krishnamurthi, Kalimuthu, Center head for Consumer, Human Resources and Environment Protection in Gudalur and Deputy Secretary, Pon Ganesan presided the camp.
