Coimbatore : The weekly market in Ramakrishnapuram which begins every Saturday evening and ends on Sunday evenings, has caused a furore among residents in the area.
The Welfare Association of the area submitted a petition to the District Collector requesting the administration to clear the market since buyers were parking their vehicles on Buddhar Street, Sarada Devi Street, Vivekanadar Street and on many other streets in the area in a haphazard manner causing traffic congestion and inconvenience to residents in the area.
The Association members said, "With over 350 shops in the weekly market, some have set up shops on the street side, causing traffic congestion on Sathy road. Shopkeepers park their vehicles irresponsibly, defecate in the open and dump rotten vegetables in the drainage, causing havoc to the environment. Also, many shopkeepers have set up their shop without licence and are demanding more money, illegally," they added. Hence, the members petitioned the Collector to inspect the market and take necessary action to restore order in the area.
