Coimbatore: Farmers in the city petitioned the District Collector K Rajamani demanding action against sale of borewell water through water lorries allegedly from unauthorized borewells which was also a reason for their crops to blacken.

Farmers from Ottarpalayam near Pallapalayam, Coimbatore filed a petition stating that Bala Subramaniam, a resident of their area who had obtained permission to set up a cattle farm in their area was digging borewells in the area, instead was instead.
"Instead of doing agriculture, he is involved in selling water taken from the borewells through lorries, thereby reducing the ground water level in the area and also leading to a decrease in the water of agricultural wells," stated the petition. The farmers who expressed their grief owing to blackening of crops while cultivating coconuts, banana and sugarcane, demanded immediate closure of the sale of borewell water.
The farmers later said that the District Collector had assured them of appropriate action in this regard soon after a survey of their lands by the Tahsildar.
