Sluices in Sulur and Irugur areas to be restored under Kudimaramathu scheme - Minister SP Velumani

Coimbatore : Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme SP Velumani called for public participation under the Kudimaramathu scheme in which sluices, shutters, lakes would be desilted and repaired.

Initiating the Kudimaramathu scheme in Sulur, Irugur and Neelambur at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs to renovate the sluices in the region, the Minister said that "The Tamil Nadu government has been working to rejuvenate the water resources and water management using various projects under the Kudimaramathu scheme. 1829 projects are being executed in a budget of Rs. 499.68 crores."

"Out of which 45 projects in a budget of Rs. 7.43 crores will be executed in Coimbatore district. Participatory irrigation management farmers are asked to contribute 10 percent of the expenses as labour or in cash and the 90 percent will be borne by the government", the Minister added. 

He assured that Kudimaramathu works to be undertaken in Sulur and Irugur will strengthen the entire bund, repair sluices and clear supply channels. Desilting works would also be carried out, as part of the scheme. 

"By doing so, the 2561 meter long, 4.42 meter high sluice can store 0.7 million litres of water. Through which, 334 acres of land in the area and 5000 acres of farmland in the surrounding areas will be benefited. The measure will also help increase the ground water table", said Minister SP Velumani. 

The Minister also requested the farmers of the area to take part in the work which will supervised by an official from the State government. He also urged the farmers to implement rain water harvesting structures in their lands and conserve water. 

District Collector K. Rajamani, MLA P. Kandasamy, District Rural development officer Ruban Sankar Raja, Public works department Assistant Executive Engineer (water sources) Jayaprakash and other officials were present.
