The Nilgiris: To protect the environment and forests of the Nilgiris District, the use of plastic products has been completely banned.

The Chennai High Court issued an order on May 29 where it had advised the Nilgiris District to avoid using plastic bottles, plastic containers and soft drinks. Hence, the District administration has decided to install water purifiers on the highways, tourist spots and public places across the District to make drinking water accessible for the public.

Steps are being taken to install the drinking water ATMs at the Ooty Government Botanical Garden. The drinking water ATM is estimated to cost about Rs 1.5 Lakhs funded by the Municipality. Drinking water ATMs are to be set up in 20 popular locations on the highways by August 15. The ATMs will dispense drinking water at Rs 5 per litre.

As per the Chennai High Court order, all shops, restaurants, lodges, commercial complexes, forest area checkpoints in Burliyar, Kunjapanai, Kakanalla, Nadukani, Thaalur, Cholady, Pattavayal, Kethi, areas on the Ooty main road and Nilgiris District limits have been banned from using plastic containers for food or bottles for beverages from August 15, 2019.
