The Tamil Nadu Government has set aside Rs.66 crores to transport 10 MLD water using railway wagons from the Cauvery-integrated Water Supply Scheme at Sakkarkuppam near Jolarpet.
The State Minister D Jayakumar, D Benjamin and K Pandiarjan participated in the function.
SP Velumani addressed the media later and said that the Government had put in place contingency measures to meet the water supply needs of Chennai.
Farm wells have been utilized to bring water to Chennai and two new desalination plants have been commissioned to convert sea water into drinking water.
Abandoned quarries at Sikkarayapuram have also been used to draw water to supply to people who have been hit by water scarcity due to poor storage in reservoirs including Chembarambakkam and Poondi.
“Presently 524 MLD is being supplied in the Greater Chennai area through these measures to augment water supply to thirsty denizens,” reiterated Velumani.
