The Nilgiris : Online auction for tea leaves was held at the Coonoor Tea Leaves Auction Centre, today. 19,77,000 kg of CTC variety and 41,000 kg of the Orthodox variety of tea leaves were auctioned, with per kg sold at Rs.79 to Rs. 80. Only 78 percent of the tea leaves were auctioned while 22 percent remained unsold.

Though buyers from Egypt, Pakistan, Iran and other south Asian countries participated in the auction, some quantity of the tea leaves remained unsold due to increase in production. Since it has been drizzling in Coonoor for a while now, which is the apt weather for tender tea leaves to flourish, the production of tea leaves increased to huge quantities, leading to a fall in prices, according to exporters.
