Poor storage in many Ooty reservoirs becomes cause for concern among Ooty residents

The Nilgiris : Due to insufficient South west monsoon rainfall, the water levels in all major dams are receding fast which has become a cause for concern among Ooty residents.

Ooty, being a popular tourist hill station attracts over 30 lakh visitors every year and one lakh people live here as permanent residents. While major dams including Parsons Valley have hit rock bottom with only 20 ft storage against the full capacity of 50 feet, Marlimund Lake is at 8 ft while the Tiger Hills Dam is at 14 ft and Gorishola is only at 3 ft minimum storage, which cannot meet the daily water distribution needs in the town, without hiccups.

However, officials who are hopeful said that even though many dams have reached a ‘dead storage’ level, unlike last year when the storage level situation was much better, the Ooty Municipality could carry out water supply until September-end without any major hiccups. The onset of the North East monsoon could ease the situation by then, say officials.

The Ooty Municipality is drawing 10 MLD from Parsons Valley and 0.45 MLD from other reservoirs and dams, to ensure water supply for its residents every day. With 500 hotels and resorts functioning in the hill town around the year, the water supply system needs to be on par to meet the demands of the town. The Ooty Municipality is said to be trying its best to meet the deficient storage levels by putting contigency measures in place.
