A Raja, the Nilgiris MP met the Union Minister for Highways and Transport, Nitin Gadkari and requested his immediate attention for the four pending National Highway (NH) projects in the Coimbatore zone, which includes the Nilgiris constituency.
In a report submitted by A Raja, a detailed study has been done of the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam (65 kms) National Highway project that has been pending for over a decade now. The Nilgiris MP mentioned that the project had to be sanctioned immediately to solve existing traffic issues, by enabling it to be a by-pass for Coimbatore. He also mentioned that by doing so, traffic flow into the Nilgiris and the adjoining state of Kerala will also be eased.
The Nilgiris MP further added that the eastern by-pass (54 kms) project which has been pending for 12 years should be completed immediately to connect Trichy Road with Mettupalayam, at the foothills of the Nilgiris via Sathyamangalam. He also said that the Coimbatore-Karur (114 kms) NH project for which the route map was released two years ago, needs to be executed with immediate effect to enable decongestion of traffic between Coimbatore and Palladam. The unresolved issues between NHAI and L&T has put the L&T by-pass (28 kms) on hold. He reiterated that these projects need to be completed immediately to bring down the number of accidents and reduce the time taken to reach Coimbatore airport from Pollachi and Palakad regions.
"The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mooted the idea to make India a 5 trillion dollar economy by 2024. Economists say that this will require a growth rate of over 12 percent per year. To accelerate growth, you are well aware that infrastructure has to be strengthened,” reiterated A Raja.
