Coimbatore: The Catholic Syrian Bank on Annur-Avinashi Road near Mettupalayam serves many people from the neighbouring areas.
Early this morning, at 3.30 am, the red alert alarm at the bank went off. People living in the area informed the Annur police and they reached the spot immediately.
With the help of the bank officials, the police entered the bank and found the window broken, at the rear of the bank. It was also discovered that the thieves had first tried to break open the doors and then moved to the windows at the rear of the bank to gain entry. The police are searching for the culprits using the fingerprints collected as well as the CCTV footage.
It is reported that it was the alarm that had helped in warding off the thieves from looting the lakhs of rupees kept in the bank. The Karumathampatti Deputy Commissioner along with a team of police have registered a case of attempted robbery and are also investigating the bank officials.
The police are also investigating the angle of whether it was the same gang of thieves that had attempt a similar robbery in Andhra Bank of the same area, on June 26.
The public in the area are reportedly panicking with the thieves still at large, and have requested the police to take immediate action and apprehend the culprits.
