Coimbatore : The District Collector K Rajamani flagged off an awareness procession organised by the Health and Family Welfare Department to mark World Population Day.
The District Revenue Officer, Ramathurai Murugan, Deputy Director (Sanitation) Banumathi and Assistant Director (Sanitation) Krishna participated in the event, along with other officials. Nursing college students also participated in the procession which started from the District Collectorate and culminated at the office of the Health and Family Welfare Department.
World Population day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. Awareness is created on issues like family planning, gender equality, maternity health, poverty and other human rights.
The District Collector highlighted the importance of better maternity health and wellness of children in our country, as well as the need to control the exploding population in the country. Nuclear family, appropriate age for marriage, contraception, age gap between children, maternal health, girl child education, gender equality, controlling population, environmental cleanliness, tree planting and poverty abolition were some of the topics that were highlighted at the event.
