Coimbatore : After more than three months of closure, the Kovai Kuttralam falls located at the foothills of the Western ghats in Siruvani will be open for public viewing from tomorrow. The District Forest Officer. D Venkatesh announced that the gates to the Falls will finally be thrown open on Friday, after nearly 108 days since closure.

With the Kovai Kuttralam falls area being renovated with newly laid roads and a newly-constructed children's play area, the place is now expected to attract tourists round the year owing to its new look. The improved facilities also include a separate pool downstream for children and ladies, cemented floors in the Falls area above the main pool, repaired stairway, relaid roads leading to the Falls and the administrative changes in the Eco Development Committee, under which tourism is promoted in the area.

The Falls was initially closed on March 25, citing drought and the fact that the facility almost ran out of water in the following days. With most of the forested landscape in Coimbatore being drought-hit, elephant movement had also increased near the Falls which was one of the few water sources but this was cited as a reason for extending the closure period of the Falls.

Lack of rain in the summer and monsoon seasons helped officials to carry out concrete constructions in the play area. Big boulders in the main play area downstream were initially removed and one of the streams on the left side of the Falls was closed to give way for construction.

The Kovai Kuttralam Falls eco-tourism is now expected to have a grand reopening amidst fanfare.
