Coimbatore: The Indian Government's Field Outreach Bureau (FOB), the TN Government's Health and Family Welfare Department and the PG Department of Social Work and Psychology of a private college in Kuniamuthur, Coimbatore jointly celebrated 'World Population Day 2019' at the college premises.

Elocution and essay writing competitions on the 'Present Scenario on World Population' were held at the college. The top five in each competition were awarded certificates and prizes. Karai Kalaikkuluvinar Kalaikulu - a drama troop from Karaikal also performed songs and dramas, delighting as well as educating the audience on rising population and the need to control it. The students were also awarded a certificate and prize for their participation in the Elocution and Essay Writing Competitions on World Population Day.
Dr. P Krishna, the Joint Director of Health Services, Coimbatore was the chief guest at the event and addressed the gathering saying, "Population is steadily increasing in India. But the media are helping in the dissemination of information about the growth of population so that people are made aware of the statistics of population. If population increases, it drastically affects food demand, space constraints and water scarcity."
"Family planning is not only for women, but also for men. It is the need of the hour to spread awareness on contraceptives, particularly among the youth. 'One Child, One Tree' is this year's concept. People should not shy away from using contraceptives but can avail family planning information from Government Hospitals, Urban Health Centres and PHC. There are various Government schemes available to control population," said Dr. P Krishna, highlighting the Government's efforts to control population.
The Field Outreach Bureau, Coimbatore also conducted pre-campaign programs on World Population Day at the Government High School, Kurumbapalayam in co-ordination with ACC Limited, Madukkarai on July 10. The representative from the school, ACC, Coimbatore was present during the program. Kareena B Thengamam, Assistant Director, Field Outreach Bureau, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Coimbatore welcomed all the dignitaries. S R Chandrashekaran, Field Publicity Assistant, Field Outreach Bureau, Coimbatore, Dr A Ramesh Arumugam, Secretary, GEM Trust, Sulur and Dr A Alagarsamy, HOD, the PG Department of Social Work and the Principal of the private college where the event was conducted, were also present.
