Coimbatore: The public were delighted witnessing the increased water flow into the River Bhavani for the past few days, owing to the monsoon rains.

The Pillur Dam, located right in the middle of the Western Ghats in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore District was built to harness water resources from Upper Bhavani, Kunda Silent Valley and the rains from the Siruvani mountain range of Vellingiri. One can witness overflow of water into the Pillur Dam, owing to the south-west monsoon season in June and July.

Since the south-west monsoon rains were not as heavy as expected this year, the water flow into the Athikadavu Bhavani River had completely drained, thus resulting in the shortage of drinking water for the people living in the mountain regions.

With the onset of monsoon rains now in the areas of the Siruvani River and parts of the Nilgiris district, the water flow in Pillur Dam has increased again, after two months. The water level of the 100 ft capacity dam is now at 89 feet. The water flow of the dam is 1500 cubic feet.

The public and the farmers are delighted by the continuous rainfall in the nearby areas, rejoicing at the fact that they will now get uninterrupted drinking water supply from the water projects dependent on the River Bhavani. It is to be noted that in June and July, the River Bhavani usually overflows and fills up but due to the failure of the expected monsoon rains, the Dam had not yet filled up.
