Tea and mountain vegetables cultivation play a vital role in the economy of the Nilgiris district. Mountain vegetables like carrot, beetroot, radish, beans, potato, cabbage, peas and cauliflower are cultivated across 5000 hectares of land. It is to be noted that there is a high demand for mountain vegetables from Ooty in other States.

Ooty farmers specialise in carrots cultivation. With the help of the carrot washing machine, carrots are cleaned and segregated based on their quality. The carrots are then sold at the Ooty Municipality market, Mettupalayam market, and also in various markets in Chennai, Madurai, Nellai and other places.

To wash the carrots cultivated in Ooty and surrounding villages, carrot washing machines have been made available in various places in Ooty, Ketti Palada, Kil Appukod, Muthorai and other places. In some areas, the machines are set up near the fields. The mud and chemicals that are washed off get directly discharged into the streams that are again used for irrigation purposes. This could lead to crops being affected. Since this had become an issue for the farmers, they requested the administration to make provision for purifying the water that is used for cleaning carrots.

The Nilgiris District Administration has assured that water purifying equipment will be fixed into carrot washing machines to prevent contamination of streams and reduce water wastage.
