Coimbatore : As colleges are busy celebrating freshers days to welcome the newly joined students, the City Police have been thoughtful to host an awareness session on 'anti-ragging' and 'drug abuse' to the professors and principals of educational institutions.
Coimbatore : As colleges are busy celebrating freshers days to welcome the newly joined students, the City Police have been thoughtful to host an awareness session on 'anti-ragging' and 'drug abuse' to the professors and principals of educational institutions.
Around 150 people, who were representatives from 54 colleges including NSS and NCC students were part of the awareness session organised by the City Police, held at the Commissioner Office here on Monday.
As per the orders of Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, Sumit Sharan, the awareness session was held in the presence of Balaji Saravanan (Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law & Order), Selva Kumar (Deputy Commissioner of Police, Headquarters), and Perumal, Deputy Commissioner of Police Crime Branch.
The officials sensitised the participants on the ill-effects of ragging and drug usage. They also threw light on the legalities associated with the issue and how it can affect the life of the student.
The teaching staff and the principals were advised to create separate teams for monitoring ragging and to spread awareness on drugs among the students.
The officials from the Narcotics bureau announced a toll-free number 6484200100 to register grievances or any tip-off on drug-related issues. The college Principals who participated in the event also shared their views and suggestions to annihilate ragging and drug usage among students.
Dr. Moni, a psychiatrist who was part of the event also advised the college administrators on the importance of understanding the mental health of the students and how to deal with sensitive issues.
