Coimbatore: MP P R Natarajan offered his condolences to Dr. Ramesh who lost his wife in a recent drunken-driving accident. He also reiterated his support to shut down liquor shops which have led to the loss of many lives in the Jambukunti area.

On June 24, Shobana, the wife of social activist Dr. Ramesh died on the spot when a drunken driver on a two-wheeler rammed into her vehicle near Kanuvai, Coimbatore. Her daughter Shantala who was riding pillion was also critically injured. Dr. Ramesh fought for justice for nearly five hours on the middle of the road with his wife's body, demanding closure of TASMAC shops in the area, which had already claimed many lives. Subsequently, a written statement by the Government had promised that the Tasmac Shop No. 2222 would be shut down permanently.
MP P R Natarajan met Dr. Ramesh to offer his condolences and enquire about his daughter who was in hospital. "The TASMAC shops at Jambukunti area, near Kanuvai, pose a threat to people living in the area. The residents there have been carrying out various protests demanding the removal of the TASMAC outlet. As a result of this, on December 17, 2018, the District Superintendent of Police had recommended to the District Collector to permanently close the TASMAC shop. The Kerala Government had already prohibited sale of liquor in Attapadi - Agazhi - Annaikatti region due to frequent accidents and threat to the environment. The recent tragic accident in which Shobana lost her life due to the over speeding drunk motorist shook the community int he area. The records of the Kottathoor Tribal Hospital, after complete examination of the motorists confirmed that they were in an inebriated state while driving," said P R Natarajan.
The MP also hoped that the District administration quickly fulfills the promise of permanently shutting down the TASMAC shop No. 2222, as directed by the District Collector. He also said that the police should take action to identify those who are endangering the lives of people in the area by driving at breakneck speed. The Joint General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, U C Sivagnanam was also present along with the MP.
