Coimbatore: Among the 114 refugee camps in Tamil Nadu for Sri Lankan refugees, over 300 families in Coimbatore Pooluvampatti refugee camp have been living in the area for nearly 29 years without a citizenship status.
Citing that refugees in other countries can acquire citizenship, the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees petitioned the District Collector, K Rajamani saying that they had not been granted citizenship even after having lived in Coimbatore for nearly three decades.
The Sri Lankan refugees highlighted the fact that according to their lineage, they belonged to Tamil Nadu and hence are fully entitled to become citizens, here. Addressing the media, the refugees lamented that they were depressed at being refugees for so long and wished they could become citizens of India since they had no intention of going back to Sri Lanka. They also mentioned to the media that they had submitted a petition to the District Collector requesting for citizenship.
