Coimbatore: MP P R Natarajan urged the Corporation and District Administration to stop the process of evicting the poor, humble and lower class working people in the name of developing Coimbatore into a Smart City.
Coimbatore: MP P R Natarajan urged the Corporation and District Administration to stop the process of evicting the poor, humble and lower class working people in the name of developing Coimbatore into a Smart City.
MP P R Natarajan, in his press release said, "Over 50,000 people in Coimbatore live in areas accredited by the Slum Clearance Board. For over 30 years, these families are living with the loan support and other facilities provided by the Slum Clearance Board. Meanwhile, the Corporation and District Administration are constantly trying to evict them. At present, threats have been issued in areas like Ukkadam, Jeevanagar and Thadagam Road. Coimbatore, after being upgraded as Coimbatore Corporation has not sanctioned 'patta' to anyone. Even in the newly affiliated areas of the Corporation, 'Corporation' is cited as the reason for refusal to issue 'patta.'
"Almost 50,000 of the poor and working class people in the city are engaged in construction work or cleaning the city. They have not only been refused 'patta' but have also been evicted from the city by the Corporation and District Administration, which is not acceptable at all. There are enough vacant plots belonging to the Government in the city which the Corporation and District Administration can uses to build houses for them. Instead, on what basis are the poor being directed to the South part of the city?" questioned the MP. He also claimed that his party condemns eviction of the poor and relocating them to areas where there is no transport or educational institutions. "This is an attempt to destabilize the economy of the underprivileged working people," opined P R Natarajan.
He further stated in the release that "People should be given 'patta' in the place where they live with the financial support of the Central and State Government to build houses there. This can only be a safeguard for the working people who depend on the Government. We, therefore, demand that the Government make a provision for the settlement of these people who have been residents in areas for over three decades instead of relocating them." The MP also announced that his party has plans to consult with people in the area and conduct a survey on this. "We are planning to engage in an agitation along with the aggrieved and underprivileged people to draw the attention of the Government to this issue," he added.
Earlier, residents of Siddapudur, Jeeva Nagar and Thadagam Road areas met MP P R Natarajan at the CPM office in Gandhipuram on Sunday and submitted their petition stating how they had been affected by the actions of the Corporation and District administration.
