Coimbatore: Sri Krishna Sweets, Coimbatore and Arogya Siddha Hospital jointly organized 'Nalandana - Nalam Nam Kayil,' a third-year inaugural event of health tips from a doctoral dissertation that commenced from July 1.

On the sixth day of 'Nalandana - Nalam Nam Kayil,' Dr. E Shanmugam, the psychiatry expert from SRM Medical College shed light on the importance of mental health and how it directly influences one's physical health.

He said, "People think that mental illness is a weakness and tend to hide it from others. It is a health hazard. It should be cured by counselling and medication. Mental health degradation is not only a problem for the individual but also the health of his family and community. In Thirukkural, Thiruvalluvar himself highlighted that "Mana nalam man uyir aakam" which means that mental health is the root source for a better life and world. The increasing rate of crimes such as suicide, murder, sexual abuses and so on are indicators that mental health degradation is on the rise society," stressed Dr. E Shanmugam.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that almost 30 lakh people in the world commit suicide, in one year, and the suicide rate is increasing in developing countries like India. The reason for suicide is unstable mental health. In recent times, the word 'emotional stress' is very commonly used among youngsters and elders. The reason for this emotional stress is that parents do not teach their children how to overcome even small problems. But instead, they teach their children to stay away from problems. To overcome emotional stress, one should know how to face it, talk heart-to-heart and speak the right positive and motivating words. In case of mental health issues, it can be treated easily provided the concerned person visits a doctor for counselling and takes the right medication," opined Dr. E Shanmugam.

Dr Shiny, India's first Sports Nutritionist recognized by the Olympic Association spoke at the event saying, "We can't say that people of the same weight can be identical.

The function of hormone glands varies from body to body. Exercise and dieting alone are not enough for physical fitness or to lose weight. It is necessary to test the muscles. It is essential to understand that fitness is impaired if a person cannot sit down folding their legs. Whenever a general health check-up is done, it is very much essential to check the functions of the insulin gland." Dr Shiny also noted that the appearance of warts around the neck is not just a skin problem. "It may also be the beginning of insulin deficiency. Deaths due to cancer is increasing day by day, and the main reason for it being the polluted environment we live in and the food we eat. Reducing the consumption of wheat and meat in the diet is beneficial," she stressed.

"Symptoms of insulin deficiency include hunger and the tendency to have sweets within two hours of eating. Exercises like walking, yoga, physical training, cycling and weightlifting is essential. Surya Namaskaram and swimming are good for health and we should not sleep late at night," advised Dr Shiny. "Do not to be distracted by TV or cell phones when eating. "Be enthusiastic in daily activities. Laziness and sleeping during the day are not healthy habits," she added.
