Coimbatore : Addressing water crisis is one of the defining challenges of our time. Access to water is a fundamental right to all. Be it water scarcity or access to clean water, efforts only by government institutions cannot provide lasting solutions. People's participation in conserving water play a pivotal role in providing lasting solutions for the looming issue.

With awareness comes responsibility, believes Brookefields and NGO Siruthuli who have joined hands to garner the attention of the citizens by hosting a session 'Uyir Neer' at Brookefields Mall on Saturday and Sunday.

The programme is about creating awareness and showing methods of water harvesting techniques. Stalls have been displayed to educate people on clean water and why water harvesting is mandatory.

To bring a change, first people should understand the gravity of the water crisis issue. And, how their callousness has contributed to the issue. Lecturing people on the same is not awareness. They have to be taught ways of doing the same, say the organisers.

Live demo on 'Rain water harvesting' and simpler conservation methods fascinated the spectators. The public showed much interest in understanding how rain water harvesting can attribute to recharge the ground water table.

Another intriguing part of the campaign was 'Virtual Water' where volunteers explained about usage of water in consumer products. They added that around 10 thousand litres of water is used to manufacture a jean. Likewise, the volunteers explained how to minimise the use of water on a daily basis.

As part of this campaign, the organisers have planned to conduct a short video contest and drawing contest on topic 'Uyir Neer Semippom' to be conducted on Sunday (today) at the shopping mall.
