Coimbatore: P.R.Natarajan, Member of Parliament from Coimbatore Constituency has requested the District Collector to address the grievances of farmers who have been at the receiving end of police intimidation and harassment during the laying of High Tension (HT) lines through cultivable lands in the 13 districts of Western Tamil Nadu.

In a statement issued to media here, the Coimbaotre MP said that the Power Grid Corporation officials have been laying HT lines through cultivable lands, without taking farmers into confidence and the officials are acting in an autocratic manner.
“The officials use police to threaten the farmers with imminent arrest, if they dare to oppose the move of erecting HT line through cultivable lands, which is highly condemnable” the MP said in his statement.
“The farmers complained that even women and children have not been spared and are threatened by the police”, the MP noted.
Appealing to the district administration and Collector, K. Rajamani to intervene and safeguard the livelihood of farmers, MP, P.R. Natarajan said that if the officials do not pay heed to the genuine pleas of the farmers, the protests might only escalate in the coming days to the detriment of the project.
“To avoid such a scenario, the Collector should hold talks with the officials and find an amicable solution to the problems faced by the farmers of the region who are losing their landholdings for the sake of erecting HT lines” the MP said.
