Day three - 'Urakkam Uyar Marundu'

"Sleeplessness or disturbed sleep for a day or two is not a problem. But if it persists, a sleep specialist should be consulted. As prolonged sleeplessness is a disease and triggers multiple health complications", said Dr. Ramakrishna, Sleep Specialist.

He threw light on the importance of sleep and why sleeplessness should not be ignored.

"Earlier, a 8 hour sleep was the routine. Today, a 8-hour sleep cycle is becoming a rare phenomenon, due to work stress and poor lifestyle", he opined.

He added that disturbed sleep for more than two weeks should be immediately consulted with a sleep specialist. "If not treated, sleeplessness will lead to other health complications", Dr. Ramakrishna warned.

"Among the several side effects, sleeplessness mainly leads to lack of concentration, stress and absent mindedness. Hence 6- 8 hours of sound sleep for adults and minimum of 9 hours sleep for children is mandatory", he noted.

He advised the gathering to maintain a fixed time for sleeping, every day. Such small changes will help to set right erratic sleeping habits.

"Early morning walks and excersises help expose body to sunlight, thus aid in secretion of 'Melatonin' hormone which inturn aids good sleep. Eating at the right time, eating atleast 3 hours before bed also assist in having a good sleep.

He also advised that having banana, honey and milk before bedtime will help induce sleep and warned that smoking and alcohol will cause sleeplessness.

Day 5 - 'A sweet way to handle diabetes'

Dr. T. Durairaj , Diabetologist, spoke on 'A sweet way to handle diabetes'.

“Soon, India will be having the highest number of diabetic patients in the world. The number of diabetic patients are increasing every day. The present situation is that a 60 year old diabetic needs to spend Rs.4000 monthly for medicines. If there are two diabetic patients in a family, a major portion of the earning will have to be set aside for medicines", he said.

He added that eating in right quantities is the answer to prevent diabetes. Eating more than what is required can be harmful and can be the root cause for diabetes.

"1000 calories a day is the basic requirement for a human being. But mostly, the consumption crosses 2000 calories in a single meal. Both feasting and starving are the enemies of diabetes. Not just medicines, diabetic patients should practice regular excercising and aerobics to control diabetes”, Dr. T. Durairaj said.

The next session was handled by Ayurvedha physician, Dr.Paarthasarathy, who spoke on methods to control diseases.

"Living along with nature is the basics of Ayurvedha. The habit of eating seasonal foods should be cultivated from a young age. For example, in the winter season, food which will take longer time to digest must be consumed. Sleeping during noon at spring season can be harmful but a nap during summer can be helpful", the ayurvedic practitioner explained.

"There is no truth in the saying that eating less rice is healthy. Ayurvedha proposes intake of right kind of rice in the right quantities in different seasons. Eating less rice and stopping it completely can be harmful. The body will not accept an increase in the intake of vegetables and grains", he said.
