The Nilgiris: The beautiful hill station of Ooty is natural delight for tourists from all around the world. The natural green pastures are not only a haven for tourists and people, but also to wide variety of animals too. Off late, there are a lot of cattle and horses that are left astray to wander in the streets of this tourist haven.

There have been several requests from NGOs to the District Administration to control the spread of stray animals as they are a threat to the traffic and also might have unknown diseases and might help spreading them when left unchecked.

Worldwide Veterinary Service, an organisation that is working in Ooty has come forward to create a solution for this by implanting tracking chips on horses.

Ilona Otter, Director of Worldwide Veterinary Service said that the horses in Ooty are implanted with chips for easy identification. Once a chip is implanted, the horse is identified with a unique number, gender, it’s owners and unique identification marks and other information are stored in the database and then tracked with another device.

Ilona Otter said the chip fixed on horses cost about Rs. 5000 to 7000. In the first phase 13 horses are fitted with chips through injections for free by their organisation. When scanned, the chip will reveal all the information about the horse. So with this information the owners can be intimidated and the straying animals can be controlled and monitored.
